Privacy Policy

The short version

There are no accounts and no server of ours. Everything you create, meaning bookmarks, saved comparisons, quiz progress and your display preferences, is stored only on your own device and is never sent anywhere. We cannot see it.

The Android app does show ads and does measure which features get used. Both are provided by Google, both are described in full below, and the usage measurement can be switched off inside the app.

What stays on your device

• Bookmarked timeline entries and their status
• Saved timeline comparisons
• Quiz progress and completion counts
• Your theme, view mode, region order and other display preferences
• Whether you have completed onboarding

Uninstalling the app or clearing your browser's site data removes all of it, because it never existed anywhere else. The bookmarks export feature exists precisely because we hold no backup of your data for you.

Advertising (Android app only)

The app shows ads through Google AdMob. These appear as a small banner on the Bookmarks, Quiz and Settings screens, as an occasional full screen ad after finishing quizzes or reading a number of entries, and as an optional ad you can choose to watch to remove ads for 30 minutes.

To serve those ads, Google may collect and process device information including your device advertising identifier, IP address, device type and general location derived from that IP address. This happens inside Google's own advertising SDK. We do not receive that data, and we do not send Google anything about you ourselves. Google's handling of it is governed by its own policies, which you can read at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.

If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, the app shows Google's consent form before personalised ads are used, and your choice there is passed to Google. You can reset the advertising identifier, or opt out of ad personalisation entirely, from your Android device settings under Privacy and Ads.

Usage analytics (Android app only)

The app uses Google Analytics for Firebase to count which features are actually used, so that effort goes into the parts people rely on. What is recorded is limited to anonymous events such as which screen was opened, which timeline region was viewed, that a quiz was completed, or that a bookmark was set.

These events carry no free text. Search terms you type, the contents of your bookmarks and any entry text are never included. Firebase does associate events with a randomly generated app instance identifier and basic device details such as model, operating system version, country and language.

You can turn this off at any time in the app under Settings, in the Usage analytics section. Switching it off stops collection at the source rather than merely hiding it, and the app keeps working exactly as before.

Crash reporting (Android app only)

The app uses Firebase Crashlytics so that crashes and errors can be found and fixed without having to rely on someone reporting them. A crash report contains the technical stack trace, the device model and operating system version, and a short trail of recent in-app actions such as which screen was open. It contains none of your saved content.

The website

The website at parallel-civilization.vercel.app carries no ads, no analytics and no tracking scripts. It is hosted on Vercel, which keeps standard server request logs, including IP addresses, as part of operating the service. Everything you save on the website stays in your own browser's local storage.

Notifications

The app can optionally schedule a daily local reminder. It is created and delivered entirely on your device by the operating system. No notification content or schedule is sent to us or to anyone else.

Children

This app is study material aimed at adults preparing for competitive examinations. It is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from them.

How long data is kept, and how to have it deleted

Everything you create is kept for exactly as long as you keep the app installed, because it lives only on your device. Uninstalling the app, or clearing the website's site data in your browser, deletes it immediately and completely. There is no copy anywhere else, so there is nothing for us to delete on your behalf and no deletion request to make of us.

The advertising, analytics and crash data described above is held by Google, not by us, under Google's own retention schedules. Analytics event data is set to Google's shortest available retention period. Crash reports are retained by Crashlytics for 90 days. Advertising data is governed by Google's advertising retention policies.

To stop that data being collected at all, turn off Usage analytics in the app under Settings, and reset or delete your advertising identifier in your Android device settings. To have data Google already holds deleted, write to us at the address at the bottom of this page with your Firebase app instance identifier or advertising identifier and we will pass the request to Google. We can also delete the Firebase instance directly on request.

Security

The strongest security measure here is structural rather than procedural: we operate no server and hold no database, so there is no account to breach and no store of your data to leak. The app is fully offline by design, and its historical content is bundled into the app itself rather than fetched.

Where data does leave the device, it goes only to Google's advertising, analytics and crash reporting services, over HTTPS, encrypted in transit by those SDKs. The website is served over HTTPS. Data held on your device is protected by Android's own per-app sandbox and by your device's screen lock and encryption, which is why we recommend keeping both enabled.

Your choices

• Turn off usage analytics in the app under Settings
• Reset or delete your advertising identifier in your Android device settings
• Uninstall the app, which deletes everything stored on the device
• Write to us to ask what is held, though in practice we hold nothing that identifies you

Changes to this policy

If what we collect changes, this page is updated first and the change is described here specifically rather than folded in silently. The date at the top always reflects the most recent change.
